Mercury Retrograde: What It Actually Means (and What It Doesn’t)
The most blamed transit in astrology, explained without the panic — including what is genuinely worth doing differently.
著者:Astro Dap
Three or four times a year, Mercury appears to travel backwards across the sky. It gets blamed for everything from missed trains to broken relationships. Most of that is nonsense. Some of it is genuinely useful.
What is actually happening
Nothing, astronomically speaking. Mercury does not reverse. Because it orbits the sun faster than the earth does, there are periods when we overtake it — and from our moving vantage point it appears to slide backwards, the way a slower car seems to drift back as you pass it. The illusion lasts about three weeks.
What Mercury governs
Mercury is the planet of communication, logic, travel, contracts and the small mechanics of daily life — the emails, the schedules, the things you sign. When it is retrograde, astrologers read those areas as being in review rather than in motion. Note the prefix that Mercury retrograde keeps handing you: review, revise, reconsider, reconnect.
What is worth doing differently
- Read the contract twice. Not because the planet will curse you, but because a period explicitly framed as "check your work" is a good excuse to check your work.
- Back up your data. Reasonable advice on any day of any year.
- Expect the old to resurface. Old messages, old colleagues, old drafts. Retrogrades are famously good at returning things you thought were finished.
- Finish rather than start. Projects begun now often need rework. Projects finished now often benefit from the extra scrutiny.
What is not worth doing
Do not postpone your life. Cancelling a job offer, a move or a conversation because of a three-week transit gives a planet authority over decisions that belong to you. Mercury retrograde is a weather report, not a court order.
The honest summary
If your emails are already careless and your calendar is already chaotic, Mercury retrograde will feel like a curse. If they are not, it will feel like a quiet three weeks in which a few old things come back around. The transit does not create the mess. It just turns the lights on.
